BLACK SHEEP
for harp ensemble / duo by Lauren Scott
PRACTICE VIDEOS
Inspired by sea shanties and the anarchic authority of Jackie Weaver (booting misbehaving men out of zoom meetings), Black Sheep is a jolly piece for harp ensemble in 2 parts and was written for Harps North West in Cumbria.
The first part is written with a ‘trad players’ in mind. Although it is fully notated, trad players may want to learn their part by ear.
The second harp part is written with ‘classical’ players in mind.
It can be played on either lever or pedal harps.
There are four versions of the second harp part, and four versions of the first harp part.
Whenever this piece is played, please make sure that either Harp 1 & 2 or Harp 1a & 2a is being played by someone within the group. In effect these are the “lead parts’ and the subsequent versions are tapered versions of these lead parts.
Players may want to swap between the different levels of each part and I envisige that a hybrid of the different versions might end up being used by each player. Feel free to encourage the group to mix and match elements from the different versions of their part.
There is a joyful shout of ‘hey!’ towards the end, and I would encourage you to always add that in.
Have fun and go for it!

DUO - with CLICK and chapters. Once you hit play, you can hover over the timeline to skip to various points within the piece. You can also click on the daisy wheel bottom left hand side of the player and adjust the playback speed to make it slower if you wish.
Zoom session with Harps North West
This is a recording (just over one hour in length) of a workshop with members of Harp North West. I work through the entire piece, section by section, demonstrating various techniques, suggesting fingerings etc.
There are four versions of the first harp part; the more advanced version is Harp 1, Harp 1a has a few corners ‘knocked off the edges’ whilst the more gentle versions are Harp 1b, and then Harp 1c.
